This program is for physicians and other health care professionals who provide end-of-life care
Learning Outcomes-Course Objectives
1. List the different goals of care and describe how they interrelate and change
2. Discuss the assessment and management of common physical symptoms
3. Compare and contrast nociceptive and naturopathic pain
4. Describe the current state of dying in America and contrast this with the
way people wish to die
5. State the features of sudden illness that require special skills
6. Define Advance Care Planning and list the steps of advance care planning
7. Describe the broad legal consensus that has developed around issues of end of
care, and list the common legal myths and pitfalls that can interfere with quality
care
8. Discuss why communication of bad news is important
9. Identify the principles for withholding or withdrawing therapy
10. List factors that might lead to futility situations
11. Describe the assessment and management of the pathophyolsiologic changes of
dying
12. Define physician-assisted suicide and euthanasia
13. Describe the concept of suffering and understand the suffering of physical,
psychological, spiritual, financial, and anticipatory grief
14. Identity the depression, anxiety, and delirium, in patents facing the end of life
and describe the approach to management of each symptom
